How John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release (MFR) can benefit you

Wednesday, May 31st, 2017

Journal from Sedona:

How John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release has helped me and how it can benefit you

In April 2017, I had an incredible visit to Sedona, AZ to study with John F. Barnes, the visionary, world-renowned physical therapist, and creator of his technique of Myofascial Release therapy (MFR). I had no idea I was going to be shaken to my core through this work. The land in Sedona has a truly powerful essence, and by adding the profoundness of this technique I quickly experienced its healing nature. My time in Sedona advanced my skills and knowledge, but the greatest gift was that it helped me to heal on a deeper emotional, mental level. I’ve always believed that as a therapist, if I can release deeply then my clients are able to reap the benefit as well.

MFR allows me to feel more authentic and comfortable in my own skin. My goal for you is to feel amazing by living a pain-free and active lifestyle.

John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release therapy is gentle, safe, and consistently produces results that last. The main differences in this MFR technique from traditional massage therapy are:
1) The time element. The holds can start at a minimum of 3-5 minutes, at times longer to wait for the fascia to truly release or elongate and cause a permanent shift. After the 5 minute-mark your body naturally produces its own anti-inflammatory response.

2) The “sinking in” method versus pushing. When you experience MFR you will feel me sinking slowly in to the point of resistance versus pushing or forcing beyond your body’s resistance. This allows us to work WITH your body instead of forcing it. Also, it’s important to have NO oils or lotions on your body to prevent slipping or losing grip with the fascial connection.

3) You can wear shorts and a bathing suit top. This allows me to see areas on your body that may have a vasomotor response or turn red during your session. Also, if your body wants to move off the table, you can feel comfortable moving while being covered in your clothes.

MFR sessions work best when done in a series, even starting at 2-3 times a week for 2-3 weeks.

Many conditions have been helped with this technique including:

Chronic pain, back pain, headaches, migraines, pelvic pain, sports injuries, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel, adhesions, TMJ, scoliosis, sciatica, infants/children, women’s health issues, and more.

If you are curious about MFR or desire to find relief from your pain, please call and schedule an MFR schedule today. Or if you know anyone who may find this work helpful, please refer them to me. I’d love to assist as many people as possible to find the pain-free freedom that they deserve.

Stay tuned…

Later in May, I’ll be posting about the new techniques I learned while in Sedona, AZ.

Tap into your inner Aloha

Friday, March 3rd, 2017

Outrigger boats with Diamond Head in the background.

Spring is almost officially here! The daffodils and cherry blossoms are already showing their beautiful selves around my neighborhood in Asheville, NC.  Inspired by this warm weather, I’ve been craving the ocean and it has me reminiscing about my first time in Hawaii.  Lovely memories of swimming with dolphins in Honaunau (Place of Refuge), making leis on Waikiki Beach and watching the lava flow into the ocean at Volcanoes National Park all make my heart joyful.  Another aloha-filled experience was my first Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage. I loved that it is an ancient healing technique filled with the intention of unconditional love.  This form of healing is felt beyond the physical; it is transformational for my mind, soul, and energy too.  It took me to a subconscious state of grace and peace.  I came out of the session feeling like every pore of my body was breathing.  If you’d like to feel this for yourself, please schedule a Lomi Lomi session with me.
It’s a truly distinct experience to allow the aloha-spirit to flow through you and welcome in Spring!

Sending you blessings, gratitude and Spring Gladness!

Happy New Year and welcome to 2017

It’s that quintessential time to refresh our focus and set new goals, resolutions and intentions for the year.  I love this time to feel that “fresh start,” shake off the non-supportive entities and embrace that which I’d like to experience.  Ideally, it’s foundational to have goals that can satisfy the mind, body and spirit.  If you’re looking for a different angle or some ideas, look below at some tips to support you with optimal health this year.

I’d love to hear your intentions and please feel free to call for assistance with any of these ideas listed below.  Wishing you vitality into this fresh start of 2017.

Healthy Tips & Practices for feeling and looking great in 2017!

Baby Steps:

  • Drink half your body weight in ounces of fresh water every day (For example if you weigh 150 lbs, drink 75 ounces of water a day)

  • Quit smoking.
  • Eliminate sugar, sodas and alcohol.

  • Eat double the vegetables to fruit per day.
  • Take a daily high-quality multi-vitamin, probiotic and antioxidant. (see “Vital” below)

Self-care with Myofascial Release

Wednesday, November 30th, 2016

Self Myofascial Release is an incredible way to be an active part in decreasing your pain and increasing your connection to your inner wisdom.  I’m teaching clients how to use the 4 inch ball to continue their progress between sessions.  The following are instructions on how to use the ball most effectively.  A YouTube video is included to show you how to use this therapy ball.

Pure Therapy’s Myofascial Release 4 inch ball self-treatment tips:

1)     DO find a place on your body that is tight, hard or tender.  That is what we call a restriction: an area where the fascia (connective tissue) has dehydrated and gotten stuck.

2)     DO spend 3-5 minutes in one place. Fascia is mostly collagen which is resistant to stretching.  It takes time to open and release, one thing you can’t rush.

3)     DO be curious.  Explore beyond where the symptom is.  Myofascial release looks to finds the cause of the symptom which can be far removed from the area of pain.

4)     DO self-treat in the soft areas of the body, not directly over bone.  Lying on your back you could treat: the backs of the legs, gluteals, upper back, between shoulder blades.  Lying on your stomach you could treat: the front of the thighs, pelvis, and abdomen.

5)     DO listen to your body, never force or try to “muscle” your way through self-treatment.  If you cannot breathe normally and relax into it, reposition the ball or move your body.

If need, please feel free to contact Kim Cantor Iamurri at 828-712-4238 for more information and details regarding your individual self-care needs.

Hometown adventures with new curiosity

Soul to Soul Notes: Practices for transformation

Having an adventure in your hometown & seeing it with new eyes of curiosity

We had an amazing life adventure in Italy and truly savored the moments.  Coming home was comforting, but at the same time a little sad for losing the novelty of the “travel-escape.”  We pined for Italian fresh food, the museums, the lifestyle, & the wonderment around each corner.  However my husband and I vowed to see Asheville and WNC with new eyes, by appreciating all the incredible events, people, and nature with a new found curiosity.  We wanted to shake the post-travel doldrums by embracing this community and not taking it for granted.

Our first adventure out was to Graveyard Fields on the Blue Ridge Parkway to find the leaves already in a full array of colors. We’ve been to our local markets and recreating our favorite Italian meals. I was grateful to partake of the Ciderfest and Leaf Festival this past month, reconnecting with friends old and new.  We felt like you could always act like a tourist and go see or do something that you’ve never tried in the area.

So if you’ve just grown tired of the daily routines or just back from your jet-set adventure, I wish you a November full of new perspectives. And I’m so grateful for YOU…making this community unique and special. Happy adventuring!

Helping Hands for Italy’s Earthquake victims

Thursday, August 25th, 2016

Help for our Italian brothers & sisters after devastating earthquake in Norcia, Italy 8/24/16!

In solidarity and with universal helping hands towards our Italian brethren, 10% of all massage service revenue from now thru September 2016 will be donated to help the healing of these people and their homes.  Thousands of people were injured or displaced and some towns have been completely destroyed.  The money collected will be donated directly to the Italian Red Cross.  If you feel called to help, please click to a donation page here.

We will be traveling to Italy from September 12th – October 4th (therefore out of the office) and will be near some of these areas.  With your generosity and continued prayers, we can all lend compassionate hands to the Italians.

Thank you in advance for your help and support!

“Grazie Mille!”

10 Tricks to make summer easier

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016

I saw this fun list from the Country Living e-newsletter.  The 1st tip “Making your own aloe vera ice cubes” is a great idea especially after a day in the sun.

1) Make Your Own Aloe Vera Ice Cubes*

If you happen to get a bad sunburn (please, use sun protection!) freeze aloe vera in an ice cube tray. Once it’s set, you can rub on your skin for an extra-soothing effect.

Get the tutorial at The Frugal Female.

Try some of these tips while we still have summer! Live joyfully!
